Queen Helene Mint Julep Masque

Hey guys~

Today, I’ll be reviewing Queen Helene Mint Julep Masque!

…… LOLWHUT (is that)?

…this!

Okay, okay, I know most of you (especially in Asia) will not have heard of this before, but it’s pretty well known in the US!

I must first comment on the size of this.

IT IS HUGE.

Not convinced?

Let me give you a size comparison…

With two standard-size lip balms (for some reason all lip balms are the exact same height and size!)

Look at that!

Stack three lip balms up and you get the rough height.

I couldn’t stack three lip balms because I’m uncoordinated and clumsy, okay?

Stop harping on it already!

Okay, now let’s have a look at the label behind-

That sounds pretty good, eh?

I’m kinda iffy about the ingredients though…

Sounds really chemical-y.

Kaolin is sorta like clay (I think it had its roots in China?), and it’s used to make pots and stuff!

So essentially this is like a clay mask- thick and cracks upon hardening.

This mask (masque) is quite refreshing and cooling, but not so much after you wash it off, and when it dries the mint smell fades and the sulfur in this dominates.

…Sulfur?

Don’t worry guys, sulfur has been proven to be good for the skin and many skin products contain trace amounts!

People go to hot springs for the skin benefits, y’know!

Swimming in sulfur~~

And you get soft, supple skin!

For some reason the mask was quite itchy when I first applied it but when I washed it off there was no redness or irritation, so perhaps it was cos I’m not used to clay masks?

Hmmmm….

Anyway when I washed it off I got baby-smooth and soft, firm skin, so I quite like the feeling of this mask!

I usually use this just before my bath, so I can wash it off and come out feeling refreshed!

No mess too 🙂

It does dry out your skin, being a clay mask and all, so people with dry skin should apply some moisturiser before and after using this mask!

I just apply my after-bath moisturiser and I’m set!

Mentholatum Lip Ice in Strawberry, SPF 15

Okay I’ll do another lip balm post!

This was the second lip balm I bought, after Maybelline’s Soothing Cherry lip balm! (see post)

I bought it in Laos when I was on an OCIP (overseas community involvement programme) for about 2.30 SGD (rough calculation) which is obviously only half the price here ^^ (about 4.30 SGD)

I originally intended to get it for my mum but she fell in love with the Burt’s Bees lip balm instead (post, here) so she gave it to me instead. I’m glad she did!

Sorry the pictures are kinda unclear, it’s ‘cos the balm is so translucent the camera can’t really pick it up.

I was trying to focus on the tip and in the end I got so fed up with the lazy method of auto-focusing I just turned it on manual focus and adjusted and… viola! Slightly better. (I didn’t upload the blurred ones though)

The camera actually picked up colour better when I put my hand there, so pardon my ugly fingers.

I usually use this balm during the terrible three-hour lecture hell day because it has the ‘oily’ feel that I really need and the scent is not too strong, so it won’t distract me much.

Why not use Burt’s Bees? You may ask.

Well, because Burt’s Bees gives heavy moisture but it has a matt/ dry feel, which I don’t want during cold lecture periods- I want the oily feeling!

Okay I’m kinda contradicting myself in my previous posts but whatever, I just want that oily feel even though Burt’s Bees gives me more moisture.

I think I’m developing a compulsive lip balm applying habit gosh :X

You should know from the brand name that this lip balm gives this ‘icy’ feeling after application. Burt’s Bees gives me that feeling too, and it’s actually because of the peppermint I think? Try putting toothpaste on your lips (toothpaste dries out your skin though) and that’s the feeling you will get.

I’m not sure about how natural their ingredients are but I think it shouldn’t matter much unless you are some organic health-conscious person.

If you are, Burt’s Bees would be a safer bet- but not many shops in Singapore sell them. Just be warned.

You can like Lip Ice’s page on Facebook for free samples!

Look at how cute the sample is!!

I have the same thing for the Lip Ice Sheer Colour balm~

I think the sheer colour sample giveaway is over though 🙁 You can go to the Malaysia page to check, maybe they still have stock? That’s where I got mine ^^

I keep them in my little pouch and bring them around everywhere- so convenient and cute! They should totally sell the samples ._.

Maybelline Baby Lips- Soothing Cherry, Mango Pie, Baby Lips, Pink Blast

Hey guys~

Today, I’ll be reviewing several lip balms~

I know, I know, it’s kinda my fault for procrastinating and putting this off so much.

But it’s not entirely my fault that I have term tests AND I’ve been busy with the new layout!  *nods furiously*

Plus I found so many cute favicons online and got distracted….  *guilty face*

Okay. I’ll be reviewing the Maybelline range of lip balms, Smoothing Cherry, Mango Pie, and the new range of tinted lip balms- Baby Pink and Pink Blast!

Let’s start with my first purchase nearly two years back- Smoothing Cherry! Back then, I was this baby-faced teenager with absolutely no zits and I didn’t give a hoot about skincare. No cleanser, no toner, nothing!

Actually sometimes I think using so many products may conversely worsen the condition of my skin…. oh well.

But I digress.

Anyway, I bought the lip balm (Cherry) on my friend’s recommendation… It’s a long story but I fell in love with it because it smelt so nice~ Yeah, yeah, I know. I’m a sucker for nice scents. Sometimes I dab it behind my ears…

And my bf likes it! *hehe*

The scent is so fruity and delicious, it makes you want to eat it.

Delicious, no?

Mango Pie’s scent comes off as more artificial to me but it’s nice nonetheless.

It has a less oily feel when applied as compared to Cherry but it’s equally moisturising.

I prefer to use Mango in school because it has a lighter scent, less sticky, and does not have a tell-tale ‘oily’ or ‘shiny’ look, so I’m not tempted to wipe off my balm like I sometimes do for Cherry cos it gets sticky and annoying when I’m out of air-conditioned places.

The last two tinted balms have the same scent, Mixed Berry, which smells like raspberries  tons of different berries mixed together.

Either way, it smells so divine!

The scent is definitely more subtle than the previous two and not so artificial, and is less sticky/oily. It doesn’t provide a lasting cover moisture-wise so I found that I had to constantly re-apply during my crazy triple lecture day, which really got my goat.

If you ask me, Lip Ice’s Sheer Colour Lip Balm (review here) is waaaay better because:

1) Angled tip means easier application (see Lip Ice post)!

Maybelline’s lip balms are all flat-tipped. That’s okay if it has no tint, but these two have (no matter how light they are- talk about that in a minute), and so I find it immensely difficult to apply them confidently without a mirror because it’ll probably go all over the edge of my lips and I’ll get clownish big smackers.

2) It has a deeper shade! Come on, I don’t want to apply the balm over and over again just ‘cos I want some colour in my lips.

3) It is cheaper. I got mine for 5.30 BDN (same as SGD) and the Maybelline tinted ones are 6.90 SGD at SASA, like seriously, so expensive for so little colour- might as well buy some cheapo lipstick with the money.

I shouldn’t be complaining though ‘cos I got mine on offer during the Chinese New Year sales for only 8 SGD for two!! Newly manufactured somemore hehehe.

Okay okay I’ll stop before y’all bash me to bits 😀

I’ve added my thoughts into nice tables for your easy reference :3

Between the four lippies….

…and the tinted balms!

Oh there’s not much colour difference between the two Maybelline ones so might as well get which ever one looks cuter to you on the outside.

See below photo for proof.

I had to put it on white paper because you can barely see it when applied on the back of my hand, which again tells you how crazily light they are.

Pricing: 5.90 SGD for non-tinted balms and 6.90 SGD for tinted balms.

That’s it from me 🙂

Super long post right!

In short, GET LIP ICE SHEER COLOUR IF YOU WANT A TINTED BALM.

Bye-bye!

Update as of June ’13: I have decided that I am going for a natural look now and I much prefer the Maybelline lip balms now! Lip Ice Sheer Colour seems a tad bit strong for summer 😛 Sorry for the harsh reviews hahah!
